Once upon a
time, book reports were a necessary evil. They were something that my teacher
required upon my finishing a book so that I could display what I learned and prove
that I did in fact read the book. The necessity of the book report back then was
questionable. One could argue that it was just another hoop to jump through in
order to obtain a letter grade which signified…what?
But now I
don’t have to write book reports. I
do so by choice! Who would have thought such a thing might one day occur. I
want to write about books that I read as I finish them, so with any luck you
should see these “book reports” popping up from time to time. I like to keep
track of what I’ve read, what my take on a given book was, what my favorite
quotes/passages were, what it taught me, etc. I’m hoping that my writing about
what I’ve read isn’t a horribly boring thing to read about. But at the same
time, I’m kind of doing this more for my own record than anything else, so if you
decide to come along for the ride then great, but if not, then no harm done!
I do love to
read, though I have not been moving through books very quickly in the last year.
I think I maybe average a book a month. Maybe.
And I usually have several books going at once. For a long time I liked to read
fiction more than anything else, but have developed an increasing fondness for
non-fiction. These days I often have at least one fiction and one non-fiction book in my book stack at a time.
I’m going to
play “catch up” with these book reports a little bit, and start with the first
book that I finished this year (Mere
Christianity by C.S. Lewis). Then I’ll post about the books that I’ve read
since then as well.
So here we
go! This is fun because I get to be the student and the teacher here, which means that I’m the one who sets the
deadlines and passes out the grades. Maybe instead of a letter stamped at the top
of a paper, my grades can involve cinnamon rolls. That sounds like a good idea.
One completed book report = one cinnamon roll. Yes!

You and Linden would be 2 peas on a pod. She asked last week to do a book report, so we did one...her story choice was a lot simpler than Mere Christianity...she chose Jack & Jill from her Nursery Rhyme book :-) Now she keeps asking where the "rising action" is in all her books, ha! We love reading too at our house - I think it is fun that you are doing your own reports and a cinnamon roll sounds like a fine reward!
