Welcome to Capitol Hill: Burgers and Pizza by Spike

This post marks the beginning of a series that will introduce you all to our new ‘hood and those establishments and features that have rapidly become our faves. Some of you have already had the chance to visit and will be familiar with the locales discussed, but for the rest of you this will give incentive to come and visit! In all actuality, most of these posts will probably be about our favorite local restaurants (or at least the ones we've had a chance to try out), because in our mind they make up some of the best parts about living in Capitol Hill.

So without further adieu, I introduce you to Spike Mendelsohn’s burger and pizza joints, Good Stuff Eatery and We, The Pizza. Both restaurants opened up within the last year and are owned by chef Spike Mendelsohn, who was a contestant on Bravo’s Top Chef. The burgers at Good Stuff are really tasty but we think that their claim to fame is the milkshakes. The “Cookies and Cream” shake is our personal favorite, but they're all delectable. In fact, I dare say that these babies just might have the power to make a grown man cry.

Love the cow logo. And love the giant cowbell hanging from the ceiling. (This pic was taken from upstairs.)
With the fam over Thanksgiving. This was the day before Turkey Day, after my mom and I had spent all day in the kitchen. We thought that we should probably go out for dinner that night and save what energy we had left for cooking on Thursday.

So good!

As far as We, The Pizza goes, there are several good pizza places in Capitol Hill (to include Matchbox and Seventh Hill), but we like this one the best. The pizzas are huge, so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Also, we’re “thick and chewy crust people," and this pizza fits the bill. We’ve tried most of the pizza choices and consistently enjoy the sausage and pepper pizza as well as the classic pepperoni pizza. We recently tried the wings and enjoyed them as well. They also make handmade sodas and gelato desserts.

Enjoying the outdoor seating with Carolyn and Sarah back in October.

Both restaurants are about a 15-minute walk from our place, which is great because after indulging in comfort food such as this we need the exercise! Ever since we moved here we've had a lot of fun being so close to good, local restaurants.

Yum!! We so enjoyed all of the fabulous D.C. resturants when we were there for a week in the fall of 2009 - I would surely never want to cook with all of those yummy resturants within walking distance :-)
